The research at the Department is oriented towards investigating the physiological and biophysical properties of hipppocampal neurons. Two main lines are present: (1) mechanisms of synaptic plasticity and (2) mechanisms of cell damage. Experiments are performed on acutely isolated or cultured slices of rat hippocampus. The techniques include: extracellular and intracellular electric recording of spontaneous and evoked synaptic responses, biochemical assays using HPLC to analyse neuroactive substances released form the slice, fluorescence staining and imaging.
